Tenika’s journey to employment
Youth participant Tenika has had an incredible journey towards employment, achieved through a strong and collaborative approach by the MatchWorks team.
Tenika commenced with MatchWorks Mt Gravatt Workforce Australia in December 2025 and quickly began working with Indigenous Employment Consultant Lydia. At the time, she was experiencing homelessness and facing significant challenges, which she has since overcome through resilience and determination to rebuild her life. Due to the time of year and limited-service capacity, emergency accommodation was not immediately available. The MatchWorks team worked together to provide immediate assistance, including basic clothing, hygiene items, food vouchers, and a tent, whilst continuing to connect her with emergency accommodation and housing services.
The team continued to provide practical support and actively worked to link Tenika with appropriate housing services, including attempts to secure accommodation for both her and her dog, Enzio. After some time, Tenika was able to secure accommodation organised through a local church.
Determined to achieve financial stability, Tenika remained committed to her goals. She was referred through MatchWorks and participated in an eight-week program delivered by Skills and Jobs Australia. During this time, her potential was recognised, and she was connected to an employment opportunity aligned to her goals and interests.
The MatchWorks Mt Gravatt team supported Tenika at every stage of her journey. This included interview preparation, access to professional clothing through Suited to Success, relocation support and travel coordination, and ongoing mentoring and guidance.
Tenika has settled into her traineeship, in the heart of Australia’s red centre, working in Guest Services at Desert Gardens, Voyages Ayers Rock Resort. The role sees her managing over 100 bookings a week, assisting international travellers, and coordinating experiences at one of the country’s most iconic destinations.
