Neurodiversity Celebration Week – turning passion into opportunity

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a time to recognise and celebrate the unique strengths, talents, and perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring to our communities. When we identify and nurture personal interests, we unlock pathways to confidence, skill development, and real-world opportunities.

When these strengths are recognised and supported in people, they become powerful foundations for meaningful employment and future success.

Inclusive Employment Australia participant Jye joined MatchWorks in mid-2024. At 26 years old, he had not yet experienced employment, and his confidence and motivation were low. He often expressed doubts about his abilities.

The Gosnells team developed a tailored plan to support Jye’s goals. He attended regular appointments with his Employment Consultant and joined weekly walking groups.

Jye also consistently took part in PT in the Park sessions with genU Physical Health and Wellbeing, including yoga and strength-based activities designed to build his physical capacity for work. As Jye built resilience, routine, and self-belief, he began exploring different roles.

When a full-time position at a local scrap yard became available, Employment Consultant Ashton approached the employer to see if the role could be split into two part-time positions, knowing Jye could be a great fit for one of them.

At first, Jye was hesitant and unsure whether he could do the job. Ashton tapped into Jye’s interest in gaming and suggested he think of the conveyor belt buttons like a game console, where completing tasks would help him “level up.” The comparison excited Jye and encouraged him to attend the interview.

Jye was offered the picker role and supported by the MatchWorks team to prepare for work. This included transport planning, purchasing uniforms, and ensuring he had essentials like a lunchbox, drink bottle, and bag. He also met with the genU Physical Health and Wellbeing team to discuss nutrition for his workdays.

Jye has now been consistently working two days a week, developing workplace skills and gaining experience across different areas of the site. He continues to attend his Thursday PT in the Park sessions and proudly shares stories from his work week.

With his earnings, Jye was able to purchase a PlayStation 5 Pro, something he was incredibly excited about.

Looking ahead, Jye hopes to continue building his skills and one day operate a crane. He is already discussing his career development goals with the team.

Employment Consultant Ashton shared:

“Watching Jye grow from a person who once doubted his abilities to someone who now maintains reliable employment, values his routine, and sets ambitious career goals for his future has been truly inspiring. I am incredibly proud of the progress he has made and the confidence he continues to build.”

Jye’s journey highlights how recognising strengths, supporting passions, and creating inclusive opportunities can help individuals thrive.
