Building Inclusive Employment: Cafe Hopper Bility and Paul’s Story

When Holistic Care SA (HCSA), a South Australian NDIS provider, launched Café Hopper Bility, their vision was clear: to create meaningful employment opportunities and a welcoming space for people with disability.

As part of this mission, HCSA partnered with MatchWorks to find the right supervisor someone with experience, empathy and strong leadership skills. That’s when Employment Engagement Partner, Nick Scheer, thought of Paul.

Paul, a hospitality professional with more than 35 years of international experience as a chef and café owner, was the perfect fit. When Nick shared the opportunity, Paul jumped at the chance to bring his skills to a role with purpose.

Tracy from HCSA says,

“We’re so grateful for our partnership with MatchWorks and for everything Paul has brought to our team. His leadership has helped our staff grow in ways they may not have otherwise.”

For Paul, the role is about much more than coffee and customer service.

“I love being able to pass on my skills,” Paul shares. “Teaching others and seeing them grow is incredibly rewarding. I’ve learnt just as much from the team they’ve taught me patience and gratitude.”

His favourite part of the job is watching his team build confidence, gain independence and take pride in their roles. Tracy adds,

“Paul has been a perfect fit. His patience and dedication have been a huge asset. He’s guided five baristas, helping them build skills and confidence in both customer service and food delivery.”

Nick agrees, highlighting the importance of creating genuine matches between employers and employees.

“It’s so important to really understand what motivates our participants and what lights them up. When we find the right fit, the results are fulfilling and sustainable. Seeing Paul thriving and mentoring others has been an absolute privilege.”

Paul continues to be supported by Erin through Post Placement Support.

“I’ve seen Paul’s determination over the years and his commitment to overcoming challenges. It’s wonderful to see him in a role where he is teaching and empowering others while doing what he loves.”

Paul’s story is a reminder that inclusive employment is about more than filling a role it’s about building stronger, more connected workplaces where everyone can contribute and thrive.
