Persistence and dedication leads David to employment

A year of dedicated work and effort has paid dividends for David, who found ongoing employment with the help of genU and MatchWorks.

David had been struggling for confidence and motivation after finishing school. He felt disconnected from others and uncertain about his future. With the support of his mother Sharon, David joined genU’s School Leaver Employment Support program in Frankston to help him discover his interests, skills and goals.

Developing new skills and confidence

Over the next 12 months, David developed a renewed sense of self-confidence. With support from his Employment Pathways Coordinator, the young job seeker:

  • Improved his literacy skills including reading, writing and understanding work instructions.
  • Researched, enrolled and completed a course at Hand Brake Turn.
  • Secured work experience that assisted with upskilling and gaining further qualifications.
  • Linked with a mentor to increase his practical driving hours to work towards gaining his licence.

Finding work

David’s self-belief and ability to commit to tasks developed immensely and he was now ready to work. With the help of MatchWorks Disability Employment Services (DES) team, David was able to secure a job interview with a local garden and maintenance business, Simply Helping. The interview led to paid employment, and David could not be happier with his new job.

“I’m now part of the mowing crew and the job is really good,” David said.

“It has given me income and helped me get fitter. I have met some new people too.”

Congratulations David on working so hard to achieve your goals! Everyone at genU and MatchWorks is proud of your success.
