“I’ve found a great job that I’m good at!” – Yvonne’s story

After dedicating 12 years to caring full-time for her children, Yvonne has started her first job as a relief childcare educator at Aldinga Community Care Centre.

The former Noarlunga job seeker was determined to return to work when she first met Job Coaches, Te’Anu Taki taki and Emily Markham. The first step was finding out which industries Yvonne might like to work in.

“Together we set Yvonne a goal of achieving employment in childcare by the end of 2020,” Emily said.

“Yvonne also joined one of our walking groups with parents who were in similar situations. The group helped to build Yvonne’s confidence as we identified potential employers and how to use her skills to get work.”

The team provided additional support to Yvonne including:

  • Connecting her to a weekly online group where she met other “return to work” parents. These groups focused on transferable skills, creating new routines and finding a sense of identity outside of being a parent.
  • Funding a first aid and child protection course while she completed childcare training.
  • Access to Employment Preparation Activities online to open the door to new opportunities.
  • Coaching and tailored support from Job Trainers, Deb Ettridge and Anthony McCann who helped Yvonne build her confidence, prepare a resume, and build job search and interview skills.

A new career

When Aldinga Community Child Care Centre needed a relief childcare educator, the MatchWorks team knew Yvonne would be a great fit. After successfully landing an interview and trial, the Centre offered Yvonne the job.

“I’m loving my new job,” Yvonne said.

“When I started, everyone was so welcoming and friendly. It’s a great place to be and I’m learning every day.

“Our family is more financially stable now. Our savings have grown and when I find a full-time role, we’ll be able to buy a house,” she said.

“I don’t think I could have done any of it without MatchWorks. From the encouragement and confidence to put my name forward for the job, having help with my resume and finding the right clothes to go in for a trial. I’m so happy – I’ve found a great job that I’m good at!”
