Supportive team helps Nathan find new career in baking
Nathan Compton is the first to admit finding a job wasn’t always high on his priority list, but a referral to an Industry Pre-apprenticeship Program through Workplace Training Strategies (WTS) proved a life-changing moment for the young man from Brisbane.
“Before the course I didn’t want to leave the house, I had no confidence and thought ‘why would anyone give me a go?’ I was quite happy to sit in my room and play computer games,” Nathan said.
“When I heard about the course I thought I would give it a go, as I have interest in food and want to be a baker or pastry chef.”
The 6279 bakery ‘Rising to the Top’ Pre-apprenticeship program is an eight-week course designed to give job seekers the skills, passion and qualification to enter the food industry.
Nathan learnt about all aspects of apprenticeship employability throughout the program, and gained a Certificate II in Food Processing.
“Throughout the course I gained more confidence and soon realised that if I put my mind to it I can do different tasks in the kitchen.” he said.
“It was good that we were able to do a half-day in the Kitchen and a half-day doing bookwork. I found that better than just sitting in a classroom.
“After the course was finished I thought it was great they were still working with me to help find me a job. The course gave me the skills and confidence that I needed to get my life back on track.”
Nathan recently started as an apprentice baker at Bakers Delight in Cannon Hill and he could not be happier.
“I can’t thank the team enough for helping me out!”
