Frankston job seekers create mini golf course for local youth
MatchWorks Work for the Dole (WfD) job seekers have assisted in the design and creation of a transportable 9-hole mini golf course for the Frankston City Council North Hangout.
The golf course, named Peninsula Sandtrap, was unveiled yesterday at a celebratory event at Frankston North Community Centre. Guests enjoyed a game of mini golf and wood fire pizza at the event.
Frankston City Council youth service staff will utilise the mini golf course as a recreational activity to engage local youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Thirty-eight Work for the Dole job seekers worked on the project at Envision Employment Services in Rosebud over six months.
Project supervisor Pierre Du Toit said the job seekers had gained and refined valuable skills in trade areas as well as obtaining practical skills that local employers require.
“Job seekers were involved in research and design of the golf course and also learnt woodwork skills, including the use of hand and power tools, sanding and painting,” he said.
“By participating in this Work for the Dole project, job seekers have also learnt the value of punctuality, teamwork and social skills, respect for others, cooperating with supervisors, staff and other participants and practicing appropriate dress, hygiene and attitudes in the workplace.
“Four job seekers gained full-time employment and another four gained part-time employment during the project, which is a fantastic result.”
This Work for the Dole Coordinator project was a Federal Government funded initiative and was open to job seekers from various employment providers.
