Corio job seeker puts best foot forward

Alcohol, drug and legal issues were holding job seeker Nicole back from finding ongoing employment when she first presented at MatchWorks Corio.

Nicole had been unemployed for more than two years, had no driver’s licence, but she was determined to address her barriers to work.

MatchWorks employment consultant Mandy Hamilton discussed courses on offer through Northern Futures and assisted Nicole with driving lessons.

Due to Nicole’s various barriers, Mandy arranged for Nicole to start a Certificate I Employment Pathways (Getting Ahead) course which was only two days a week.

“At the beginning, Nicole’s attendance was a little amiss as she relied on being picked up. But that soon turned around and Nicole started getting to class by herself and before her peers,” Mandy said.

Nicole then went straight into the Certificate II Skills for Work & Vocational Pathways (Business Basics Program). Nicole completed the course at the end of October, while still attending counselling sessions at Headspace.

Nicole passed her driver’s licence in November and secured a position with the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning through Gforce prior to Christmas. She commenced a Business Admin Traineeship at the beginning of January.
