Two MatchWorks job seekers thrive in the same workplace
MatchWorks Werribee has assisted two job seekers to find suitable employment at GrainCorp in West Footscray.
The job seekers are employed under the Government’s Supported Wage System, which encourages employers to hire more people with disabilities.
GrainCorp West Footscray Training Manager, Graeme Chuchward, has made a concerted effort to place people with physical or intellectual disabilities into appropriate roles. It’s a cause close to his heart as his eldest daughter has an intellectual disability.
“Because of that, I am much more aware of people with disabilities and their needs,” Graeme said.
Graeme saw room to bring in an assistant, so he got in touch with Matchworks. Not long after, Matthew Sleeman started working with Graeme.
“Matthew is my assistant, he provides admin support around formatting and modifying standard operating procedures and one-point lessons for the new spreads plant at West Footscray,” Graeme said.
“He’s been with us since January and he produces excellent work. Matthew has autism, so employing him was all about finding areas that suit his skills. He is very focused and thorough, which is a real strength.”
Matthew, 30, said having his first paid employment has been a real confidence boost and will assist him in getting a future role.
Matthew has not only proved to be an excellent employee, he has also paved the way for more people with disabilities to work at West Footscray.
There has always been a need for a part-time canteen assistant, so the company worked with MatchWorks again to find a suitable employee. Leanne Ngalu was put forward.
Leanne had previously worked in food preparation in aged care. She is now working as the canteen/cleaning assistant with guidance from Liz Bridgeman, the site administrator at West Footscray who manages the canteen.
Leanne will soon be responsible for running the canteen by herself some days to cover holidays and absences.
MatchWorks will continue to work with GrainCorp to hopefully place more job seekers with a disability into employment.
