Shared supported accommodation officially opened in Frankston

A new shared supported disability accommodation was officially opened yesterday in front of local community in Frankston’s North.

Designed, built and managed by Community Housing (Vic) Ltd (CHVL), the innovative high quality development consists of a 6 bedroom home inclusive of 2 semi-independent units under one roof line. This architecturally designed home will support 6 people between the ages of 17- 27 with complex support needs.

Funding of $1.391 million was provided under the Victorian Government’s ‘Innovative Accommodation and Support Initiative’ (IASI) to CHVL with Karingal Inc. further securing ongoing support funding to support those living in this home. The land has been provided by Frankston City Council on a long term lease.

This project is a result of a collaborative partnership between CHVL, Frankston Peninsula Carers Inc. (FPC Inc), the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Frankston City Council (FCC) and Karingal Inc.

“The organisation has been providing innovative housing options for those with a disability for over 23 years. We have over 1,800 people living with a disability in our housing across Australia. CHVL are pleased to be a part of this unique project which will be a terrific resource for the community. Built to Australian standards, this development is a latest addition to our long list of diverse award winning specialised disability projects in Victoria.

We are motivated by the critical lack of suitable housing for people with high complex needs and are committed to do more as there are a large number of people with a disability wanting suitable accommodation not only in this region but all across Victoria,” says Dennis Clark, Chairperson for CHVL.

Besides CHVL Chair and their management team, the opening was attended by residents and their families, Federal Member for Dunkley, Chris Crewther MP, State Member Paul Edbrooke, Mayor of FCC Cr Brian Cunial, CEO of Karingal Inc Mike McKinstry, Berryl Gibb from FPC and representatives from their organisations.

According to Beryl Gibb from the Frankston Peninsula Carers Inc: “Our not for profit group supporting parents and carers of children with a disability, was instrumental in raising awareness of the shortage of disability housing with Frankston City Council, and initiating the project by lobbying FCC to provide the land”.

To help develop a sense of “community”, an attractive common area has been developed for the use and benefit of all residents and their families. This area includes raised garden beds, outdoor landscaping, seating and a Gazebo.

Frankston City Council Mayor Brian Cunial said “Frankston is a proudly diverse and inclusive municipality. Supported accommodation such as this contributes to the social fabric of our community and ensures individuals and their families have suitable housing facilities for the long-term.”

The opening was marked by congratulating the new residents and handing over of the personalised keyrings in the presence of their families. Expected to move in later this month, the residents have been selected as per Department of Health & Human Services vacancy management process in collaboration with Karingal representatives.

Karingal CEO Mike McKinstry said, “Karingal has a proud history of supporting people with a disability through affordable 24 hour supported accommodation, we have helped create opportunities like this for over 60 years.

“We’re committed to delivering the highest level of care and support for the residents here, and we’re excited to be part of this project.”

The innovative development includes the following:

2 x 1 bed self-contained (bathroom, sitting room and kitchenette)
2 x 1 bed with ensuites
2 x 1 bed with sitting rooms (staff assisted shared bathroom)
Support provider office + sleepover
CHVL will be responsible for the on-going property and tenancy management while Karingal Inc will provide the ongoing 24 hours support.
