Breaking barriers into female under-represented careers
Two MatchWorks participants are motoring along in male-dominated sectors, with MatchWorks supporting them on the road to satisfying work.
Amelia is working in a mechanic workshop and Leighshell is toiling away on tractors as an auto-technician, and the pair couldn’t be happier with their choices after overcoming their individual struggles to re-enter the workforce.
In following her passion and breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry, Amelia is proud to show how women can excel in the trade.
“I love that I’m challenging those old stereotypes. It’s empowering to know that I’m paving the way for more women to take on roles that were once seen as ‘men’s work’.”
Amelia, MatchWorks Participant from Aldgate
Amelia’s story highlights how the right opportunity and support can transform lives and prove that women can thrive in under-represented industries.
Amelia connected with the MatchWorks’ Aldgate team in October 2024, with the goal of re-entering the workforce after nine years of raising her boys and the challenges associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), PostTraumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, and ADHD.
Despite a combination of issues making a return to work a daunting prospect, Amelia was determined to reclaim this part of her life.
“I wasn’t sure if I could manage a job on top of everything else,” Amelia said.
“But with Nick and the team at MatchWorks, I began to believe I could take small steps toward getting back into work.”
As part of identifying the sort of work that might interest her, Amelia opened up about her past. She shared how she had loved tinkering with engines when her family had been involved in speedway racing. Nick suggested Amelia explore mechanics as a possible career path, and this sparked an interest in Amelia that she hadn’t felt in years.
Keen to follow this up quickly, MatchWorks connected her with a local mechanic who was supportive, and willing to give her a chance as a trade assistant. Ideally for Amelia, the mechanic was situated just minutes from her home, making life that little bit easier.
Amelia has been thriving in her new role, changing oil, tyres, and excelling in the trade.
“I can’t believe how much I’m learning and how confident I feel!” she said. “I’m actually enjoying going to work every day.”
Amelia’s journey continues as she and her employer recently met with a local TAFE representative, and she is now considering a Mechanical Apprenticeship.
“I never imagined I’d be here. It’s been a huge transformation, and I owe it to the support I received from MatchWorks,” she added.
“I’ve found something I’m truly passionate about. I’m excited for the future.”
For DES Armadale participant, Leighshell’s life trajectory changed when she sustained a significant knee injury. This led to multiple surgeries and a painful three-year rehabilitation.
“I had to learn to walk again, and I have no feeling in my knee due to tendon damage,” she said.
Focusing on her recovery, Leighshell worked with MatchWorks to explore new opportunities.
This led to Leighshell embarking on a new career in July 2024, through an Adult Apprenticeship, working as an Diesel Motor Mechanic specialising in John Deere equipment.
MatchWorks has provided transport, accommodation assistance, PPE, and tools to ensure Leighshell’s success in her new role.
MatchWorks Post Placement Support Tristan Smith said MatchWorks had recognised the challenges of distance for Leighshell living almost 230km from the MatchWorks office. “We took every step to ensure her transition into the apprenticeship was smooth and well supported.
Leighshell is excited to continue her learning and achieve a qualification in automotive technician specialising in heavy agricultural equipment.
The latest statistics show Amelia and Leighshell are in rare company, according to Jobs and Skills Australia data. There are only 1% women in Diesel Motor Mechanics roles and 2% in Motor Mechanics (general)*, so we are really proud to see Amelia and Leighshell lifting the representation of women in these fields.
These success stories epitomise how MatchWorks is committed to matching jobseekers with their passions, providing tailored support, and empowering them with confidence to succeed.
