MatchWorks job seekers build and donate community train
MatchWorks Work for the Dole (WfD) job seekers and supervisors unveiled and donated their Tom the Train project at a celebratory event in Seaford.
Twenty Work for the Dole participants worked on the six-month project at Envision Employment Services by stripping down an old car, restoring the engine, brakes and gear box and building a train body and four carriages.
Tom the Train was donated to Scouts Victoria at the event on Thursday, February 9 and will be used at family recreation events for fundraising and membership drives.
Local Mayor Cr Brian Cunial from Frankston City Council and Member for Dunkley MP Chris Crewther were also in attendance on the day.
Envision Employment Services manager Sean Teer said the supervisor and main controller, Andrew Muir, along with the participants, have done a brilliant job ensuring the attention to detail is of the highest standard.
“This will be such a bonus for Scouts Victoria. The train will not only raise valuable funds, but it will also bring such joy and adventure to the children who will be the main beneficiaries,” Sean said.
Project supervisor Andrew Muir said the WfD job seekers had gained and refined valuable skills in trade areas such as restoration and painting as well as obtaining practical skills that local employers require.
“By participating in this Work for the Dole project, job seekers have learnt the value of punctuality, team work, respect for others, cooperating with supervisors, staff and other participants and practicing appropriate dress, hygiene and attitudes in the workplace,” he said.
“Four job seekers have also been placed in employment following the project, which is a fantastic result.”
This Work for the Dole Coordinator project was a Federal Government funded initiative.
