Participants have the chance to take part in various community retail stores and develop the following skills:

Hospitality

Participants work in a commercial kitchen environment, preparing and serving meals to members of the public. Tasks include those performed in any commercial restaurant covering:

  • Communication skills
  • Multi-tasking
  • Personal presentation
  • Teamwork
  • Prepare and cook different kinds of foods
  • Food quality monitoring
  • Safe food handling and storage
  • Food preparation to specific dietary or cultural requirements

Landscaping and maintenance

Participants are involved in a range of landscaping, gardening and construction elements which may include:

  • Working from plans that have been made by garden designers or landscape architect
  • Site preparation
  • Turf and seed lawns
  • Planting and propagation
  • Installing features like paving, paths, water features and rock gardens
  • Working towards deadlines
  • Organisational skills
  • Training in use of tools and horticultural skills
  • Working independently or as part of a team

Administration/IT

Participants learn a range of administrative and information technology skills including:

  • Social media and website design/maintenance
  • Event coordination
  • Learning the fundamentals of website codes e.g. HTML and Java Script
  • Using programs from within the Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Peer to Peer Networking
  • Learning how to apply server driven systems
  • Filing, correspondence and secretarial duties
  • Minute taking
