Ed Links

Students attend accredited adult literacy and numeracy courses at the Gordon TAFE, Deakin University and at Karingal’s Gheringhap St and Geelong West sites. Volunteers assist instructors to support students achieve their learning goals by providing one to one attention. Improved learning outcomes are achieved by the increased attention students receive and the rapport that develops between students and volunteers.

Community Connections

Volunteers are matched with an individual with similar interests to share a range of social and leisure activities together on a regular basis. Activities include anything of mutual interest such as bushwalking, movies or markets. Volunteers may also assist in supporting people with a disability join community clubs to pursue personal interests in craft, cultural activities or exercise.

KABLE

Karingal Adventure Based Learning. Qualified Instructors oversee adventure activities such as surfing, abseiling, bike riding, canoeing and sailing. Volunteers with experience and physical fitness ensure participants obtain maximum benefit from the experiences KABLE offer.

Youth

Volunteers support group activities such as drama and dance but largely make a difference through building a rapport with the young people. Multi Media, further education and employment support activities such as ‘WorkLinks’ are all areas where the individual encouragement of volunteers can make a difference. Volunteers support social activities out of hours that build skills for young people to develop their friendships and confidence.

Older Adults

Participate aims to deliver choices appropriate to people at all life stages. Older adults and people with higher support needs at East Geelong enjoy activities such as relaxation, music, art and cooking. Participants enjoy the companionship of volunteers, both in individual and small group settings.
Volunteers assist in community based social activities such as regular day trips and social outings. The West Geelong and Ocean Grove sites have great accessibility to the community and their local surrounds are used extensively.

Special Events

Karingal participates in a number of regional events which promote opportunities for members to be included in community life. These include Pako Festa, Relay for Life and Workplace Big Day Out. Volunteers make these events possible and enjoy the instant satisfaction of ensuring the success of the day.

Karingallery

Karingallery is an art gallery where Karingals’ successful artists exhibit their artwork alongside other artists. Volunteers with a background in the arts maintain a supportive arts space that enables members to develop their artistic potential. Art sessions are also delivered at the East Geelong and Ocean Grove sites.

Administration Support

People with skills in administration are greatly appreciated for their ability to assist in a great many support areas. Although the work is not complex there is a great amount and the dedicated work of volunteers in this area is highly valued.

Café.Com

Café.Com provides free internet use and training to holders of health care cards and Karingal clients in a supportive and informal environment. Volunteers assist in literacy and computer skills by providing individualised support.

Kommercial

Kommercial provides supported employment for people with intellectual disabilities. Key work functions are packaging, filling and assembling a range of products. This work is carried out on a contract basis for corporate customers in the region. Volunteer duties include quality control, supporting workers to achieve employment goals and increased skills.
