National Volunteer Week 2011 – Karingal says ‘thank you’
10 May 2011
The celebration is an opportunity for leading Geelong disability service provider Karingal to say ‘thank you’ to the many people who have given their time over the past year to work with people with disabilities, mental illness and the frail aged.
Karingal Volunteer Co-ordinator Judy Simkin said the event will also see four volunteers recognised for their long service – one who have served for 15 years, two for 20 and another for an incredible 25 years.
“We are so proud to be able to say that we have four volunteers that have been volunteering with Karingal for a grand total of 80 years between them.
“We appreciate all the valuable time that our volunteers give, but we think these four very dedicated volunteers should be recognised for their long years of service to Karingal and its participants.
“Volunteers gain tremendous personal satisfaction from being involved in their own community. It’s about making a difference. But first and foremost, the reward for volunteers is that they enjoy their relationships with the people they work with.”
The annual presentation honours the contribution and achievement of Karingal volunteers. Volunteers support Karingal clients in many areas including community programs, employment and aged care.
Volunteers will be given the opportunity to mingle and enjoy the latest exhibition at the National Wool Museum – Femme Fatale.
Roles performed by Karingal volunteers are as diverse as the individual interestes of both clients and volunteers but can include helping as tutors, joining in art and craft programs or exercise groups, supporting people with disabilities or mental illness to participate in community recreational and leisure activities.
