Geelong Bowls for Sri Lanka

Local disability support organisation Karingal, its members and staff, are digging deep to raise funds for a much needed health centre in the poverty stricken area of Paddilapurum in Sri Lanka’s north east.
The inaugural Karingal Krackerjack, a lawn bowls competition and fundraiser, to be held on Friday 23rd March at the Geelong West Bowling Club, is hoping to raise $14,000 toward the purchase of a generator for the Sri Lankan health centre.
“At the core, this is about one community helping another community,” said Karingal CEO, Daryl Starkey.
Karingal is a member of the Geelong International Action Group (Geelong Inter-Act), a group of Geelong health and community organisations that are raising money for overseas aid projects particularly in Tsunami affected areas. The Sri Lankan health centre is the first project of Geelong Inter-Act.
“Karingal is very proud to be part of the project. Being a not for profit organisation ourselves, we know how vital community support is in enabling a project like this to happen,” said Daryl.
The health centre will provide services such as dental care, maternal and child health to education and child care in an area that was severely damaged by the Boxing Day Tsunami and is continually being ravaged by an ongoing civil war in the region.
